Understand the calculation

What is percentage-to-marks conversion?

A percentage describes the share of available marks earned. To turn it into a score, apply that percentage to the exam's total maximum marks. The same percentage can represent different marks when the total changes.

Percentage-to-marks formula

Marks obtained = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Total maximum marks

For 85% on a 500-mark exam: (85 ÷ 100) × 500 = 425 marks.

Steps

  1. Enter a percentage from 0 to 100.
  2. Enter the exam's total maximum marks.
  3. Select Calculate to find the equivalent marks.
  4. Use the result as an arithmetic conversion; follow your institution's rules for official grades.

Marks-to-percentage formula

Percentage = (Marks obtained ÷ Total maximum marks) × 100

For 420 marks out of 500: (420 ÷ 500) × 100 = 84%.

Worked examples

  • 435 out of 600 = (435 ÷ 600) × 100 = 72.5%.
  • 275 out of 450 = (275 ÷ 450) × 100 = 61.11%.

More percentage-to-marks examples

  • 72.5% of 600 = (72.5 ÷ 100) × 600 = 435 marks.
  • 90% of 450 = (90 ÷ 100) × 450 = 405 marks.

Aggregate percentage across subjects

For several subjects, add all obtained marks and all maximum marks separately. Divide the obtained total by the maximum total, then multiply by 100. This handles subjects with different maximum marks correctly.

Example: 85/100 in Mathematics and 72/80 in Science gives 157 ÷ 180 × 100 = 87.22%. Averaging 85% and 90% would give the wrong weighted aggregate.

Common calculation mistakes

  • Mixing up marks obtained and total maximum marks.
  • Dividing by the wrong total or forgetting to multiply/divide by 100.
  • Entering a percentage below 0% or above 100%.
  • Using an incorrect exam maximum or including subjects that should not count.
  • Averaging subject percentages when each subject has a different maximum mark.
